Covid “rapid tests” found to contain cancer causing chemical ethylene oxide, used for medical sterilization
A union representing the rights of public-sector workers has called for the suspension of rapid tests for the coronavirus, after media reports showed a swab contained multiple times the permissible trace level of ethylene oxide, a toxic substance.
The Isotita (Equality) union said rapid tests – which under current protocols thousands of people need to take every 72 hours for work – should be immediately discontinued until health authorities have investigated the matter and determined any health risks.
Citing the European Chemicals Agency, the union said ethylene oxide – a substance used to coat and sterilise PCR and rapid test nasal swabs – is toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic even when inhaled.
Ethylene oxide is a gas commonly used to sterilise many different types of medical devices, including swabs used in test kits. Ethylene oxide (EtO) gas sterilisers have been used by hospitals for over 40 years to sterilise surgical equipment and supplies that are heat sensitive or that cannot tolerate excessive moisture.
Use of the substance is banned in food production in the EU. Under EU Regulation No. 2015/868, the maximum residue level for the sum (of ethylene oxide and the conversion product 2-chloroethanol), referred to as ethylene oxide, has been specified at 0.05 mg/kg.
The Isotita union’s concerns come after a report aired two days ago on media channel Pronews TV, about a rapid test swab found to contain 0.36 mg/kg of ethylene oxide.
The analysis, done by Larnaca-based Food Allergens Lab, had set the detection limit at 0.025 mg/kg.
The analysis result – which reads “Swab” – is dated October 21.
The health ministry did not put out a statement on the matter. The Cyprus Mail tried contacting a ministry spokesperson for a comment, but she could not be reached in time for this report.
Back in August, health authorities ordered a recall of a number of foodstuffs on the market found to contain ethylene oxide, but said at the time that trace amounts pose no direct danger to human health.
The ministry had then said that the very low levels of ethylene oxide detected in certain batches of foodstuffs – donuts and ice creams – pose no direct danger to human health, “however based on scientific studies it is assessed that frequent consumption on a long-term basis, even with trace amounts of ethylene oxide, increases the risk of developing cancer.”
It had cited a European Commission decision that the level of ethylene oxide warranting recall of a foodstuff is “that minimum amount of ethylene oxide that is detectable during analysis of a foodstuff.”
Under EU standards, a food product may be recalled from the market “even where a single ingredient in the foodstuff is shown to be tainted with ethylene oxide at the lowest level detectable, including where the ingredient in question comprises the smallest part of the foodstuff percentage-wise.”
As such, the ministry added at the time, “there is absolutely no cause for alarm among people who may have consumed a foodstuff that has been recalled.”

Middle school boys allegedly assaulted by male classmate in scandal-plagued Virginia county
LGBT indoctrination leads to rape cultures
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported multiple allegations of homosexual abuse at a middle school this week, in the scandal-ridden Virginia school district known for sexualized, pro-LGBT content and an ongoing rape scandal.
LOUDOUN COUNTY, Virginia (LifeSiteNews) – The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office announced a new investigation into sexual assault allegations in the embattled Virginia county yesterday, reporting that several middle school boys were allegedly groped by a male classmate earlier this week.
“The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating multiple incidents that occurred at Harmony Middle School this week involving a male student touching other students inappropriately over their clothing,” read a statement from the sheriff’s office Thursday. “At the end of the school day on October 27, the LCSO School Resource Office learned from school staff that earlier in the day a male student was inappropriately touched over his clothing by another male student in a hallway.”
Detectives have since found that other male students were also allegedly victimized by the same boy this week, though those incidents had not previously been reported to school personnel or to law enforcement officials, according to the statement. The sheriff’s office is conducting follow-ups with parents, school officials, and witnesses.
In an email on Thursday posted to social media, Harmony Middle School notified parents that “something out of the ordinary happened at school yesterday” and that the “the administration is aware of it.” “Harmony’s administration is reviewing the alleged incident with school staff and our school resource officer,” the email added.
The new allegations come just three days after a judge found a “gender-fluid” male student guilty of forcibly sodomizing a female classmate in the girls bathroom of a Loudoun County high school in May. The same student was later charged with attacking another girl soon after being transferred to a different school after the first assault.
Loudoun County school board members and administrators initially denied knowledge of the bathroom rape, though an email published by WTOP News last week revealed that the school board had been informed of the incident the day that it happened.
“This afternoon a female student alleged that a male student sexually assaulted her in the restroom,” district superintendent Scott Ziegler wrote in a May 28 email to board members.
Ziegler claimed at a Loudoun County school board meeting in June, however, that “we don’t have any record of assaults occurring in our restrooms” and that “the predator transgender student or person simply does not exist.” The board was then actively considering a policy to let students use bathrooms according to “gender identity,” rather than biological sex, which board members adopted, along with a raft of other radical pro-LGBT provisions, in August.
Loudoun County’s handling of the sexual assault cases sparked a wave of student protests this week. More than 2,500 students at over 20 high schools in the district walked out of class on Tuesday, some chanting “Loudoun County protects rapists” and “Why was a rapist allowed in our school?”
‘X rated’ books in Loudoun County classrooms
Loudoun County has gained a reputation for graphic sexual content and LGBT activism in recent years.
In 2019, Loudoun County Public Schools sparked parental outrage with a $2 million “diverse classroom libraries” program that injected sexualized, pro-LGBT books into elementary, middle school, and high school classrooms across the county.
“The excerpts from these books are so explicit that they would garner an ‘R’ rating or an ‘X’ rating,” Larry Ward of Constitutional Rights PAC said at the time. “They’re not only sexually explicit, but include scenes of rape and pedophilia.”
Parent and Child Loudoun, a grassroots parents group, has identified multiple sexual, LGBT-related books at Harmony Middle School.
The group noted that parents flagged several titles in the district’s “diverse classroom libraries” initiative that “incorporated LGBTQ themes in grades as early as kindergarten, including the promotion of Queer Theory concepts, as well as sexually inappropriate and even explicit language in other grades,” including descriptions of “rape,” “statutory rape,” and “sexual abuse.”
Loudoun County school staff approved the book collection in collaboration with “professional collection specialists,” according to the Daily Citizen.
The county school board also voted that year to add sexual orientation and “gender identity” as protected classes to the school system’s “anti-discrimination” policy and subsequently implemented the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “Learning for Justice” program, which teaches children about “gender expression,” “gender identity,” and the rainbow “pride” flag, among other things.
